Latsia is a typical example of a new Municipality, showing great development in the industrial sector. The first Municipal elections took place in 1986, after the positive referendum of 23rd February, 1986.

The history of Latsia is not very long, although there are antiquities in the Municipality dating back to the Hellenistic Period (325-50 BC). According to the census of the population in 1881, only 15 people lived in Latsia.

The Latsia Municipality is situated a distance of 8km south of Nicosia, and through Latsia pass all the main routes leading to the capital and all the free areas of our island.

According to the 1973 census (i.e. one year before the invasion) Latsia had 1108 inhabitants. Today the population exceeds 12,000, 80% of whom are refugees living in government settlements. The refugees originate from approximately 120 occupied villages.

In former times, Latsia was an agricultural village. The main occupation of its inhabitants was the cultivation of grain and olives. Even today, the main characteristic of the Municipality are the olive trees, although the number of farmers is very small.

Due to its excellent geographical position and the road network passing through, Latsia became a modern industrial centre. There are around 3500 people employed in the Municipality.

Within the Municipality there are six churches, three primary schools, one secondary school, the Cyprus Pedagogical Institute, the Olympic Shooting Club and part of the University grounds. In the near future, further public works will change for the better, the picture of the Municipality.
