Strovolos Municipality was created in 1986 and is the third biggest Municipality of Cyprus, with a population that exceeds 70,000.

Strovolos is a big town, occupying an area of 25 sq.km. and is divided into six parishes; Chryseleousa, Agios Demitrios, Apostolos Varnavas and Agios Makarios, Agios Vasilios, Ethnomartyras Kyprianos and Stavros.

Strovolos developed and took its image today after the tragic events of 1974, when Turkey invaded Cyprus and occupied 38% of the island's territory. As a result of this, many refugees came to live in the Municipality.

Strovolos Municipality's income originates from the Municipal taxes, repayment taxes and the annual state subsidy. With this income, the Municipality carries out public works aiming at the improvement of the substructure of the town and the fulfilling of development programmes in the social and cultural fields, including sports, entertainment and of course, the sector of healthy environment.

In the framework of the policy for good standards in the field of healthy environment, Strovolos Municipality has participated in the World Health Organisation's programme “Healthy Cities” since December 1995.

It participates in this programme, carrying out different public works, activities and assisting in the improvement of the environment through quality viable rates of growth.

Strovolos, as a member of the programme “Healthy Cities” was subsidised by the World Health Organisation with the sum of $US4000 for its activites during the period between 1996 and 1997. Besides that, the Municpality's officials had participated in an educational mission, which took part in Patras Greece, as well as in the congress, organised by “Healthy Cities” which took place in Asfahan Iran in the year 2000. Officials of the Municipality regularly attend all the educational and informative lectures held in Cyprus, and its co-operation with the Ministry of Health of Cyprus, which is the national co-ordinator of the programme “Healthy Cities”, is very successful and constructive.
